Buff Bay Boys & Hanson Place Men’s Chorale of New York come to Jamaica

| 2016-07-08 00:00:00

The Hanson Place Men’s Chorale (HPMC) of New York will be in Jamaica from July 8 to 17!  Under the musical leadership of Dr. Lincoln Blackwood and managerial leadership of Mr. Robert Martin, both of Buff Bay Portland, the HPMC features 30 male voices of a rich timbre, most of whom are from Jamaica and the wider Caribbean!
Dr. Lincoln Blackwood attended the Buff Bay Seventh-day Adventist Academy, Portland High School in Port Antonio and Northern Caribbean University in Mandeville. Lincoln moved on to Andrews University in Michigan USA, Columbia University in New York and ATS University in Arizona from which he received his Doctoral degree.
His studies have spanned the gamut of liberal arts, theology, medicine and health sciences.  Dr. Blackwood currently serves as a cardiothoracic surgeon at St. Barnabas Hospital in the USA.
Mr. Robert ‘Bobby’ Martin (not the Permanent Secretary in the Ministry of Finance) attended the Buff Bay Seventh-day Adventist Academy, Windsor Castle Primary School then Titchfield High School; leaving in 6th Form to the USA.  In the USA he attended St. John’s University, Columbia University, the CUNY Graduate University Center and Walden University gaining degrees in Accounting/Economics, Business Administration, Political Science and Labor Studies.
Bobby is currently an Executive appointee of New York City Mayor Bill de Blasio, serving as Chief Compliance Officer/Administration for New York City’s Children’s Services Agency. A modest pianist himself, Mr. Martin supports the HPMC managerially with special projects and other efforts.
Founded in 1986 by Dr. Blackwood, the Hanson Place Men’s Chorale came to the attention of American and Canadian religious music enthusiasts, with the release of their debut recording, “We Sing.  They have come back to the land of their birth (for most) to bless audiences with Christian classics such as ‘Grace Greater Than Our Sin’ (Julia Johnston 1910), ‘Amazing Grace’ (John Newton), ‘Glory Glory Hallelujah’ (Howard Helvey) and ‘Let All Men Sing’ (Hal Leonard).
Perhaps if we could start Men’s Chorales in communities all over Jamaica and get all our men singing, it may help curb some of the crime and violence in this Jamaica Land we love!  After all haven’t we all heard the saying, ‘Music can calm the savage beast’?  Or to quote William Congreave (1670-1729) correctly:
Music has Charms to sooth a savage Breast,
To soften Rocks, or bend a knotted Oak.
Should you want to be charmed and blessed by the HPMC, you can listen to them on Sabbath July 9, 9am at Kencot SDA Church and 5:30pm at Mandeville SDA Church.  On Sabbath July 16 they will be at Mt. Salem SDA Church & Lilliput SDA Church  between 10:30 & 12:00 noon. Or take a listen right now at
On a sad note, Dr. Blackwood’s mother (from Dover, just outside Buff Bay) passed away about 2 weeks before this planned July 8 trip to Jamaica. Her Memorial will be held at the Dover SDA Church on Sunday July 10.
