TAJ mounts public education campaign for changes to Personal Income Tax

Tax Administration Jamaica (TAJ) | 2016-07-08 00:00:00

Tax Administration Jamaica (TAJ) has embarked on a campaign to educate and inform the public about the changes to Personal Income Tax that were implemented on July 1, 2016. At that time, the income tax threshold increased to $1,000,272 and the tax rate for statutory income earned in excess of $6M moved to 30%.
The Administration is employing a multi-channel approach to reach the widest cross-section of taxpayers possible. This includes press releases, interviews, publications, social media, and updates to the TAJ corporate website. Taxpayer Education teams, Technical Specialists and Client Relationship Managers are interfacing with payroll software developers, accountants, employers and other stakeholders to provide guidance, while TAJ’s Customer Care Centre Agents are handling telephone and email queries.
TAJ is also utilizing sensitisation sessions, as another strategy to advise the public. Two such sessions are being hosted by the Montego Bay Revenue Service Centre on Friday July 15, 2016 at the Baywest Training Facility. In addition, TAJ resource persons will be participating in a seminar, being hosted by the Joint Corporate Credit Union League on Friday July 8, 2016. Other sessions will be held island-wide for interest groups, stakeholders and members of the general public.
This change to Personal Income Tax forms part of the 2016-2017 Revenue Measures announced by Minister of Finance & the Public Service, the Hon. Audley Shaw in his Budget presentation in May.
Persons may contact the TAJ Customer Care Centre at 1-888-Tax-Help (1-888-829-4357) toll-free for further information or assistance.
