NCC offer condolences to family of victim

The Negril Chamber of Commerce would like to offer their sincere condolences to the family and friends of the victim whose life was tragically taken on Friday night while walking on the West End Road.

It is a pity that it is the death of an innocent individual that will finally open the eyes and ears of the relevant authorities to heed the numerous pleas of this community to address the crime that exists here.

For several years the NCC has been asking the Member of Parliament to assist with various proposals to curb this formidable problem, but the requests have fallen on deaf ears.  We asked for increased personnel for the police station that is grossly understaffed.  There is a dire need for lighting and closed circuit cameras along the roadways and beach, proposals were submitted, other resort areas have them installed yet Negril is still without any.   Negril has a large number of illegal motor bikes on the road and they terrorize people daily. There has been an influx of hustlers and squatters in the town and they have been allowed to settle and establish communities; one of the largest on the beach is in close proximity to the MP’s own residence in the constituency.

The officers in charge of Negril are doing the best they can with the limited resources available to them.  Supt. White and ASP Hamilton should be applauded for their persistence and dedication to the mammoth task they face but they need committed assistance. The money spent on the courtesy corps officers who most deem as useless, could be better spent towards assisting the police to effectively tackle the crime and rid the force of corruption.

The NCC is frustrated and dismayed that the MP did not ensure that this was done during his tenure in office as Minister of Tourism. He was unresponsive and inattentive to our numerous letters, emails and telephone calls and we are beseeching the new administration to address and solve the problems we are facing.   The crime situation is intolerable and we are imploring the new government to empower and enable the police and soldiers if necessary, to take immediate and proactive measures to stem the crime and prevent further unnecessary loss of lives.
