The ScotiaFoundation stepped in to assist the Jamaica Awareness Association of California, (JAAC) with the cost of transporting their 46 strong mission team across the island.  The JAAC is a charitable group of medical and educational professionals from across the United States of America, who have donated their time and expertise to offer free services and advice in Jamaica. The team was on the island for the week of May 28 to June 3, 2016.

Sharon Small, Corresponding Secretary, Jamaica Awareness Association of California, expressed her appreciation to the ScotiaFoundation for the contribution towards the cost of transportation.  According to her, moving a group of that size around the island has proven to be quite expensive.

For the seventeenth year, The group, comprised of nurses, doctors, dentists, educators, technology experts and behavioral therapists from all across the United States of America, made their way to Jamaica to offer their services, and donate their time, to some of the most underserved on the island.  This year the focus was primarily on medical and educational entities in the St. Mary communities of Rock River, Brainerd, Islington, Retreat, Robin’s Bay, and Stewart Town, in Trelawny, where both free medical and dental clinics were organised.

In addition to community service, the team hosted the 12th annual laparoscopic surgery seminar at the Annotto Bay Hospital, and conducted laparoscopic training at the Savanna-la-Mar Hospital

Members also paid visits to various elementary schools in the parish of St. Mary to deliver mathematics, science and reading training material, and have adopted, and arranged scholarships, for 6th graders at the Faith Builders Early Childhood Centre in Oracabessa, St. Mary and Buff Bay Primary in Portland.

Several educationalworkshops were also organised by the team on varied topics including “Developing the Whole Child” targeting behavioral therapists and Social Workers, ; “Creating and Maintaining Blogs with an Emphasis on Social Media”, for teachers in technology; and  “Impacting Quality Nursing Practice through Collaboration and Education” focused on nurses.
