Minister of Health, Dr. the Hon. Christopher Tufton is at the United Nations General Assembly Special Session (UNGASS) attending the UNAIDS high level meeting on ending the AIDS epidemic. The 2016 High-Level Meeting on Ending AIDS will focus the world’s attention on the importance of a Fast-Track approach to the AIDS response over the next five years.

This Fast-Track approach aims to achieve ambitious targets by 2020, including fewer than 500,000 people newly infected with HIV; fewer than 500,000 people dying from AIDS-related causes and elimination of HIV-related discrimination.

Minister Tufton said “this special meeting will provide vital information that will strengthen the Ministry of Health’s National HIV/STI Programme (NHP) which is mandated to coordinate and lead the implementation of the national HIV/AIDS response”.

Dr. Tufton added that “Jamaica is committed to working towards achieving these targets which will require more private/public sector partnerships with several agencies including faith based organziations and charities.”

The UNGASS high level meeting, which is taking place in New York began today (June 8, 2016) and will go until June 10, 2016.
