South African Delegation visits Jamaica

“A South African delegation headed by Mr. Collin Pillay, Programme Manager, Municipal Institute of Learning (MILE), located in the EThekwini Municipality in Durban, South Africa is now in Jamaica on a City to City Learning Exchange Mission Visit with Officials from the Local Government of Jamaica headed by His Worship The Mayor Councillor, Bertel Moore of the Westmoreland Parish Council.

The Westmoreland Parish Council is developing a local sustainable development plan for Westmoreland and is examining implementation of various development strategies and early action projects. The Council is also pursuing a strategy of engagement in friendship exchanges with international counterparts to enhance the technical capacity of Parish Council professionals and to obtain technical support to advance various parish projects.

The June 5 - 10, 2016 visit by the four member delegation is a first step towards forging a formal exchange of friendship between the two municipalities: Westmoreland, Jamaica and EThekwini Municipality in Durban, South Africa.

The South African delegation will participate in a week-long Learning Exchange Forum on local sustainable development with a focus on land use management, urban renewal and regeneration, informal settlements, climate change and social transformation.   

On Monday, June 6, 2016 at 9:30 am a Welcome Ceremony and Press Conference will be hosted by His Worship Bertel Moore at Hotel Commingle, 7 Hudson Street, Savanna la Mar. In attendance will be officials from Government of Jamaica and stakeholder organizations. The Learning Exchange Forum will commence thereafter at the same venue and will last through to Thursday, June 9, 2016.  Members of the media are hereby invited to attend as well as publish this information for announcement to the Jamaican public.”  END.
