Event set for Sunday, July 10 in downtown Kingston
With hundreds of invited patrons working out in Emancipation Park, GraceKennedy launched its 8th Annual 5K Education Run on Monday, May 30.  The event began with an official, brief ceremony at 5:15, and wrapped with a robust workout session at approximately 5:35pm.
“We wanted to launch a little differently this year, and we are very pleased with the turnout and the participation of those who came out to indicate their interest in this year’s event,” said Group CEO, Don Wehby. ” We sense an excitement around the July 10 staging of the Run, which will benefit the young people for whom we run,” he said.
The GraceKennedy 5K Education Run aids in the funding of education initiatives under the Grace and Staff Community Development Foundation in an effort to further the educational pursuits of students at the secondary and tertiary level. Students have been performing increasingly well under the Foundation’s education programmes, and as such there is need for greater funding.  Last year’s event over saw some 4000 participants, raising $7 million. The aim this year is to double those numbers.
Grace and Staff beneficiary, Chanel Robe was guest speaker at the event. In her touching testimonial, Ms Robe declared, “I am where I am today because of the investment Grace and Staff made in me.” General Manager of the Foundation, Tanketa Chance-Wilson spoke to the labour of love of those who work at the foundation, urging all present to do their part to help change lives.
Grace and Staff currently assists some 500 students. According to Mr Wehby, GraceKennedy has as its goal, to double that number to 1,000 students by 2020.  The Grace and Staff Foundation also operates six homework centres located on Tower Street, Majesty Gardens, Spanish Town (De La Vega City), Barbican, Savanna la Mar and the STEM Centre on Water Lane in Kingston.
The GraceKennedy Education Run happens on Sunday, July 10 starting at 6:15am at GraceKennedy’s head office on Harbour Street, and ending on Port Royal Street. The event will include runners, walkers, wheelchair entrants and since last year, cyclists who will complete a 28K race.
Highlights of this year’s staging include a race village, post-race entertainment and a breakfast inclusive race option, from the Grace Good Eats Café. Registration is open and can be done online at, at any First Global Bank or at the company’s Head Office at 73 Harbour Street, Kingston.
The event is held in partnership with the PSOJ, and with the assistance of platinum sponsors, the RJR Communications Group, Gold sponsor, Digicel, silver sponsors Running Events and the Gleaner and bronze sponsors, Grace Foods and the LAB. Hi-Lyte, Sun Bloc, GK General Insurance and other GK subsidiaries also support the event through sponsorship.
