Sport Minister, the Honourable Olivia ‘Babsy’ Grange, has congratulated the Jamaica Taekwon-Do team on their outstanding performance at the recently concluded International Sport Kickboxing Association (ISKA) World Championships and hope the success will inspire young athletes.

Minister Grange said: “We hope that the success of the team will inspire other youngsters to get involved in the sport. We also hope that it will encourage the Jamaica Taekwon-Do Association to build on these gains by extending the high school league, from which we expect to see more talent coming through to represent the country at the international level.”

Jamaica recorded their best returns in history at the May 11-22 Championships in Stuttgart, Germany, bringing home three gold, two silver and one bronze.

In congratulating the team, Minister Grange expressed how proud she was of their performance, making special mention of Subrina Richards – a 20-year-old student at the University of the West Indies, who was the standout performer for Jamaica and arguably one of the best during the championships.

Richards became the first Jamaican to win two gold medals and successfully defended her lightweight points-sparring title before securing the continuous-sparring crown.

“The achievements of Subrina Richards are phenomenal and should serve as an inspiration to other athletes in the sport, especially our young girls,” Minister Grange added.

The team will be departing the island on June 16 to Argentina where they will be participating in the International Taekwon-Do Federation Pan-American Championships.

“I wish you all the best in your upcoming championship as you go to make yourself, coaches and country proud,” said the Sport Minister.
