Company encourages more nominations for male Household Workers

GraceKennedy launched its Annual GraceKennedy Heather Little-White Household Worker Awards on Friday, May 6, at its Headquarters on Harbour Street in Downtown Kingston. The company has announced changes to the Awards relating to the judging process as well as the prizes. The company is also encouraging the nomination of more male Household Workers for this year’s competition.

GraceKennedy Financial Group CEO, Grace Burnett, represented Group CEO, Don Wehby, who was off the island. She acknowledged last year’s winners, Rosetta Steer (first), Jasmin Miller (second) and Charmaine Smith, congratulating them on all the work they have done and the progress they have made since winning the titles last year. “While we acknowledge these ladies, I want us to also acknowledge, that there are many men who work in our homes, doing the very same things that ladies like Rosetta, Jasmin and Charmaine do. Our men, though, are not getting enough recognition and credit for the role they play in our homes. That was something we wanted to ensure we paid special attention in this year’s staging of the award,” she said.

To reiterate the point Errol McGowan, who placed third in the competition’s first year, was specially recognized. Mr McGowan, a ‘Jack and Master of all Trades’ was said to be a symbol of pride and a true example for all male household workers to emulate.

GraceKennedy will, this year, award four winners – a top male and female household worker along with runner up male and female winners. First place winners will win $300,000 from GK, an account with $30,000 from First Global Bank and a $25,000 gift voucher from Hi-Lo Food Stores, and receive financial assistance for a secondary school student for a year to the tune of $100,000. Second place winners will receive $200,000 from GK, an account with $20,000 from First Global Bank and a $15,000 gift voucher from Hi-Lo Food Stores.

Nominations open May 9 to June 6 and can be emailed to gracekennedy@gkco.com, mailed in to 73 Harbour Street, Kingston or submitted online at gracekennedy.com/householdworker. Judges will choose eight finalists (four men and four women), and the top four winners chosen from that group and awarded at the final ceremony on June 15.

The judging panel consists of Head of the Jamaica Household Workers’ Union, Shirley Pryce; PROComm Head, Jean Lowrie-Chin; Grace Foods Consultant Mazie Miller; Gender Specialist Dr Glenda Simms, Grace and Staff Board Director, Anthony Lawrence and Frances Madden, Consultant to Grace & Staff.

The GraceKennedy/Heather Little-White Household Worker Award was inaugurated in 2014 to recognize and reward Jamaica’s Household Workers. It is presented in honour of Dr Little-White due to her years of service at GraceKennedy, training Household Workers, and her dedication to the improvement of their skills, and their lives.
