MINISTRY OF LOCAL GOVERNMENT & COMMUNITY DEVELOPME | 2016-03-30 00:00:00

Minister of Local Government and Community Development, Desmond McKenzie is reassuring Jamaicans that measures are being put in place and every effort is being made to improve garbage collection across the island, which should result in them experiencing some alleviation of the problem by the weekend.

Meanwhile, he is urging members of the public who are experiencing difficulty in the collection and disposal of their residential waste, to call the NSWMA Hotlines at:

1-888-253-2653 or 448-3220 between the hours of 8:30 am and 4:30pm., Mondays to Fridays.

The Minister’s appeal comes in the wake of several complaints he has been receiving from residents island-wide regarding the backlog in the collection of their waste and the corresponding increase in rodent infestation which has accompanied the delay in collection.

He is also using this opportunity to ask residents to play their part in militating against the increase in rodent infestation by properly containerizing their waste, keeping their surroundings clean and exercising proper waste disposal measures.

Minister McKenzie, who heads into a three-day Cabinet Retreat today, has further indicated that he will definitely be seeking to have the issues relating to the collection and disposal of garbage discussed as part of  the Local Government Agenda, with the hope of arriving at concrete action plans for implementation.

He is assuring the public that he will soon be updating the country and stakeholders on the way forward to improve the state of the island’s waste management programme.
