The 17th staging of the University of the West Indies (UWI), Mona Campus’ Research Days officially opens to the public today, Wednesday, February 17 at 2:00 PM. The 2016 version of the event is being held under the theme “Driving Development through Research and Innovation” and will feature 140 exhibitions across various fields including Law, Governance and Society, Pharmaceuticals and Nutraceuticals, Institution and Infrastructure and Developing Human Resources. UWI Research Days will also be accessible through the Research Days App which will allow users to identify and pin specific displays to their calendars, locate displays and stream various exhibitions. The App is available for download on android devices in the Google Play Store.

In addition to the full slate of events and activities being organized across Faculties, the flagship, Main Exhibit, has been revamped this year as the Mona Research Village. It will bring a fresh approach and new look to the research presentation. The Village located on the Graduation Lawn next to the Senate Building, continues to offer guests an opportunity to directly engage with researchers and interact with the work on show. Through posters and exhibitions, attendees will be better able to understand and discuss the UWI’s research agenda and how individual research projects can be applied to everyday life.

This year the UWI Researchers have also indicated that they will be having in depth discourse about the work which is being carried out on the exploration of cannabis as Professor Archibald McDonald, Pro Vice-Chancellor and Principal of the UWI Mona Campus explained that researchers have recognized there is potential wealth in the production of marijuana for medicinal and scientific purposes.

“Due to the ground breaking work of our exceptional scientists, we have proven that the benefits for continued development of our country provided by marijuana, far outweigh the negative and incorrect depiction that this drug has endured. But more importantly, we are trying to establish a viable and profitable industry that will secure Jamaica’s financial future - like many of our global neighbours,”

Following the Opening Ceremony at 10:00a.m., the exhibit will then be open to the public at 2:00PM. In addition to external investors and businesspersons, the Research Days effort specially targets students at the Mona Campus, as the University seeks to encourage youth involvement in research. Along with making the 2016 exhibition information accessible at their fingertips through the new App, the University has engaged the services of fast rising Reggae artiste dBURNZ and media personality Dutty Berry who will host special tours of the exhibition village at 3 p.m. on February 18 and 19 respectively.

Under the theme “Driving Development through Research and Innovation”, UWI Research Days 2016 at the UWI, Mona Campus will feature other practical ways in which the University is using its research to aid in development and create solutions to everyday problems. The exposition will run from February 17 – 19 and will allow investors, policy-makers and stakeholders in the public and private sectors alike to explore practical solutions to real world challenges, developed through Mona research.
