Ministry of Industry, Investment and Commerce | 2016-02-09 00:00:00

Ms. Sandra Shirley has been appointed to head the common Board of the Jamaica Business Development Corporation, the Micro Investment Development Agency, and the Self Start Fund, which was recently established.

As Chair, Ms. Shirley will oversee the planned merger of all three entities as part of a broader initiative to strengthen the platform for delivering the services that are needed by Micro, Small and Medium-sized Enterprises (MSMEs) over their business life-cycles.

The merger is designed to create a single agency to provide capacity building services for the MSME sector, with the goal of eliminating deficiencies in the current MSME business support infrastructure and building institutional capacity.

Recently, Ms. Shirley served on an MSME Working Group appointed by the Minister of Industry, Investment and Commerce to develop a proposal to reposition the Jamaica Business Development Corporation, the Micro Investment Development Agency and the Self Start Fund. She brings to her new role extensive experience in the financial services sector, particularly in the areas of financial and strategic planning and implementation; business and financial consulting; entrepreneurship and SME development; wealth management and trust banking. She currently serves on several Boards, including Victoria Mutual Building Society, Prime Asset Management, British Caribbean Insurance Company, and is an approved Pension Fund Trustee and is a Commissioner on the Anti-Dumping and Subsidies Commission.

Ms. Shirley takes over from Mr. Brian Pengelley, who stepped down at the end of January, due to work commitments.
