The Savanna La Mar Fire Station was reopened yesterday August 27, 2015. Honorable Colin Fagan, Minister of State in the Ministry of Local Government and Community Development with direct responsibility for the Jamaica Fire Brigade, gave the main address at the rededication ceremony held at the Fire Station, which was well attended by citizens and Parish Officials.

The Minister spoke of the negative image plaguing the Brigade and he encouraged members to be motivated and to strive to provide first-rate service to the citizens of Jamaica. He also reiterated the Ministry’s commitment to upgrading the country’s fire service; “We are all fully aware that the challenges are many, the financial limitation is chief among these so I won’t dwell on that – The Ministry of Local Government and Community Development’s aim is to find feasible solutions to the many issues facing the Jamaica Fire Brigade. While I cannot promise that this will be done immediately, I can promise you that it will be done; I have confidence in the Government’s ability to transform the JFB into the entity that will provide all the modern fire services we all envision”.

This station was constructed fifty-two (52) years ago and remedial work was carried out to alleviate some of the issues affecting the operation of the station over the years, however, there was a need for a major renovation.  The Hon. Minister visited the station in 2012 and saw the conditions the fire personnel had to endure, and he promised to prioritize effecting repairs to ensure safer and a harmonious working environment.

In April 2014, a contract was signed with Marshall Construction in the sum of $30M to run for nine (9) months.  The contracted work was completed on time and within budget, however, additional work which included construction of the environmentally friendly Bio-digester, was given to the Contractor and this extended the life of the project.
