National Blood Transfusion Service | 2015-07-31 00:00:00

The National Blood Transfusion Service (NBTS) will be seeking to boost the blood supply and raise public awareness of the need for regular voluntary blood donation by participating in the 63rd Denbigh Agricultural, Industrial and Food Show in Clarendon.

The NBTS Mobile team will be at Denbigh on Saturday August 1 and Sunday August 2. They were invited to Denbigh 2015 as part of a commitment by the Jamaica Agricultural Society to assist with sensitising Jamaicans about blood donation as well as providing a convenient opportunity for them to make their contribution.

In welcoming the on-going partnership with the JAS, Assistant Blood Donor Organizer at NBTS, Keishawna Pinnock encouraged persons to devote one hour to donating blood at the Denbigh Show.   She also highlighted the life-saving benefits involved for both donor and recipient and applauded individuals who plan to support this national effort.

In recognition of the 63rd Denbigh Show, the NBTS hopes to collect 63 units of blood.  The blood drives will take place in the Nestle Building on Saturday August 1 and August 2 from 9am to 4pm.

The NBTS, popularly called Blood Bank, urges persons aged 17 to 60 years who are in good health to offer themselves as potential blood donors to help meet the demand. Hypertensives and diabetics without complications may also donate blood if they successfully pass the screenings tests.

Members of the public are reminded that regular voluntary blood donation has benefits for both donor and recipient. Donating blood provides an opportunity to monitor one’s health which may help to reduce the risk of heart disease. At the same time the lives of three persons may be saved from one blood donation.
