Cocoa Industry Board To Launch Cocoa Rural Re-engineering Project

Panmedia Limited | 2012-03-16 08:36:00

RECREATE launches Tuesday, March 20, 2012, at 10 AM, at the Ministry of Agriculture, Hope Gardens, Kingston 6.  Special guests include the Minister of Agriculture & Fisheries the Honourable Roger Clarke, Ambassador Paola Amedei of the European Union, and CIB Chairman Mr. Frank Phipps.

The ambitious 18-month project aims to renew commercial interest in cocoa farming and bring sustainable livelihoods for young people in six targeted parishes - St. Catherine, Clarendon, St James, St. Mary, Portland and St. Thomas. The project hopes to achieve this by re-engineering the conventional rural economic farming model through extension and progression of the cocoa value-chain from traditional crop growing agriculture to agro-processing, micro-business and tourism synergies.

RECREATE fosters development and propagation of cocoa nursery operations, cocoa field management services, cocoa value-added processing, planning of tourism attractions, introductory tourist retail sales, farmer business training and rural small business development. The expected outcomes are the foundations for a modern viable cocoa industry that will flourish and attract new investors, enhance rural livelihoods and encourage self-employment.

This is the second cocoa project funded by the European Union and CIB, and it builds on the accomplishments of the first revitalisation project (Dec. 2009 to Dec. 2011) that successfully rehabilitated 2,000 acres of neglected cocoa fields by training 50 rural people in cocoa tree pruning and cocoa field maintenance using modern power tools.

The launch will include a “Handing-Over Ceremony” for some project beneficiaries – signifying the end of the first rehabilitation project and the formal beginning of the second.
