A slate of 32 top rated players will compete in the annual Kingston Backgammon Tournament scheduled for June 7 at the Spanish Court Hotel. There will be no separate women’s tournament this year because all players will compete in one event.

When Mayor of Kingston, Angella Brown Burke launched the first tournament two years ago she called it “a welcome addition to the city’s signature events.”

The tournament’s sponsors are Coldwell Banker, Spanish Court Hotel, Caribbean Producers Jamaica, Wisynco, Mega Mart, Panmedia and Ranger Protection & Security. Coldwell’s Managing Director Andrew Issa says he welcomes the staging of the event: “Coldwell sees its participation as an exciting brand opportunity. Backgammon is a game of strategy that dates back to 2500 BC, hence its worldwide popularity.”

Many of the competitive backgammon players in Jamaica are entrepreneurs, business executives and innovators who are master strategists in their field. They are equally fiercely competitive and passionate about the game.

The list of this year’s competitors includes last year’s champion Kynan Cooke and runner up Billy West, Mike Hirst, 2010 and 2011 Champion, Mark Mahfood, Gassan Azan, Eddie Azan, Warren Burrowes, Alaistair MacBeath, Bruce Levy, Jonathan Todd, Ruddy Armstrong, Joey Issa, Bruce Hart, Alistair Dance and Frederick Moe.

Backgammon has become popular in Jamaica recently, two decades after the first major tournament in 1995, won by the late Advertising Executive, Brian Paisley. Alastair MacBeath coordinated competitions in 2006 at Strawberry Hill and in 2011 at the Spanish Court Hotel.

Other sponsors are Spanish Court Hotel, Wisynco, Caribbean Producers Jamaica, Ranger Security, Mega Mart and Panmedia.
